Why Mandarin Restaurant in Bountiful Utah Is Still One of the Most Talked About Places to Eat

April 07, 20266 min read

If you’ve lived anywhere near Bountiful for a while, you already know the Mandarin.

Not in a “yeah I’ve heard of it” way. More like… you’ve been there. Probably more than once. Birthdays. Date nights. That one dinner where someone ordered way too much food and nobody regretted it.

And here’s the thing that’s easy to miss until you stop and think about it.

It’s still the same place.

Same location. Same family. Same feeling when you walk in.

That almost never happens anymore.

It Starts With a Risk Most People Wouldn’t Take

Back in 1977, Gregory “Greg” Skedros isn’t trying to become a restaurant guy.

He owns Mountain View Pharmacy in Bountiful. Solid business. Stable. Predictable. The kind of thing you’re supposed to stick with.

But he sees the shift happening. Grocery stores start pulling pharmacy into their stores. The writing is on the wall.

So instead of waiting it out, he pivots.

He buys a vacant restaurant space at 900 North and 400 East. Not just any space either. This was the original Robintinoes Pizza location. A spot locals already knew.

And instead of opening another pizza place or something safe, he and his wife Jeni go in a completely different direction.

They open a Chinese restaurant.

That decision turns into one of the longest-running restaurant stories in Utah.

This Isn’t Just Family-Owned. It’s Family-Built

A lot of places say “family-owned.” That can mean a lot of things.

This one is different.

Their five kids are in it from the beginning. Taki, John, Katina, Anthony, and Angel. Everyone is involved. Everyone works.

You feel that when you’re there. It doesn’t feel like a concept or a brand. It feels like people who care about what they’re doing.

And that part never really changes.

It Grows… But It Doesn’t Drift

The Mandarin starts small. Around 50 seats.

That wouldn’t even scratch the surface of demand now.

Over time, it expands. More space. More seating. Different dining areas. Today it’s around 200 seats with multiple rooms, including a formal dining area and a garden room.

But here’s what’s interesting.

It grows without losing its identity.

Same address. 348 E 900 N in Bountiful. Decade after decade.

Most restaurants either expand and lose what made them good… or they stay small and disappear.

Mandarin somehow avoids both.

Greg Doesn’t Step Back… He Stays In It

There’s something else that matters here.

Greg Skedros doesn’t build this thing and then step away.

He’s there. For decades.

Even into his 90s, he’s showing up early in the morning, still involved, still paying attention.

That kind of leadership shows up in ways you can’t fake. Consistency. Standards. The way staff treat people. The way food comes out the same way year after year.

He passes away in 2022 at 93 years old.

But by that point, the culture is already baked in.

The Handoff Actually Works

This is where a lot of businesses fall apart.

Next generation takes over… and something feels off.

That’s not what happens here.

Angel Skedros Manfredini has already spent 34 years working alongside her dad before taking over with her husband Paul.

So when they step into ownership, it doesn’t feel like a transition. It feels like continuity.

Same expectations. Same attention to detail. Same way of treating people.

That’s rare.

The Food Is Why People Keep Coming Back

You can have a great story, but if the food slips, people stop showing up.

That never really happens here.

The kitchen is built around wok-trained chefs, many with roots in China or experience in San Francisco. The menu grows to over 100 items, but it never turns into a mess of random dishes.

There’s a clear lane.

Classic Chinese dishes, done really well, adjusted just enough to fit what people here actually enjoy eating.

Not watered down. Not trying to be overly exotic just to prove a point.

Just really solid food.

People talk about:

Char shu that actually has flavor
Lettuce wraps that end up getting ordered every time
Szechwan dishes with real heat
Curries that feel a little unexpected but still fit
Ginger salmon that surprises people who don’t usually order fish
Desserts that don’t feel like an afterthought

And then there are the small things.

Rice isn’t automatically included. You order it separately.

That might sound minor, but it tells you something. They’re intentional about how the meal is structured.

The Reputation Isn’t Built on Hype

Over the years, Mandarin racks up a long list of awards.

Best Chinese in Davis County.
Best Chinese in Salt Lake.
Best in Utah.
Mentions from USA Today.
Recognition nationally.

That all sounds impressive.

But honestly, that’s not why people trust it.

They trust it because it’s consistent.

You can go there ten years apart and have almost the same experience. That’s incredibly hard to pull off.

It’s Still Busy… Right Now

Here’s what matters most.

This isn’t a story about something that used to be great.

It’s still operating. Still family-run. Still drawing crowds.

Weekend waits are normal.

People drive from all over the Wasatch Front to eat there.

Hours are tighter than some places. Closed Sundays. Limited evening windows. Even a few weeks closed in the summer.

And it still works.

That tells you everything.

Why It Actually Matters to Bountiful

You can’t really separate Mandarin from Bountiful at this point.

It starts as a Greek-American family taking a risk on a former pizza building that once housed the original Robintinoes. It grows into something that outlasts trends, competition, and economic shifts.

And along the way, it becomes part of people’s lives.

Not in a dramatic way. In a steady, reliable way.

It’s where people go when something matters. Or sometimes just when they want something they know won’t disappoint.

That kind of place is hard to build.

Even harder to keep.

So Yeah… It’s Still That Place

There are a lot of restaurants that are “good.”

There are fewer that are still around decades later.

And then there are places like the Mandarin.

Still here. Still run by the same family. Still doing things the way they decided to do them back in the late 70s.

That’s not normal.

That’s why people keep talking about it.

Before You Put It Off Again

A lot of people say they’re going to go back.

Or they’ll get there soon.

Or they haven’t been in years but keep meaning to.

You know how that goes.

Life fills up. Time moves faster than you expect. And places like this… they feel permanent… until one day they’re not.

So here’s the simple nudge.

Go.

Take your family. Take someone who’s never been. Go remind yourself why places like this matter.

And if you’re thinking about putting it off again…

Don’t.

Go experience it… while we still have time.
